Aftermath of 2013 earthquake, Government of Balochistan established Project Management Unit (PMU), Housing Reconstruction Awaran (HRA), with the support of Government of Pakistan in 2014 for reconstruction of permanent houses for earthquake affected families in Awaran and Dandar area of Kech district of Balochistan. After successful completion of 1st Phase, Saudi Government through Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) stepped in and signed 03 MoUs with Government of Pakistan for construction of permanent houses, construction of government buildings and restoration of livelihood in Awaran Balochistan. Reconstruction was carried out on the bases of ‘Owners-Driven-Construction-Mode’ wherein no contractors were allowed to be involved in construction work as it was not possible for contractors to complete the projects in a vast area with a scattered population and deteriorated law & order situation.
Two different house designs adopted for construction:
Mud House
Brick House
Seismic safe house design developed by NED UET, claimed Asia Civil Engineering Coordination Council (ACECC) Award in 2019.
Soon after the disaster, the Government of Balochistan and central government initiated relief works followed by a reconstruction project in 2014 with contributions from Government of Pakistan, other provincial governments, international donor organizations, Saudi Fund for development and civil society organizations.
